French stylist Guy Laroche, born in 1921 in La Rochelle, was behind the creation of the company that bears his name. Guy Laroche worked for Jean Desses from 1949 and then, in 1955, moved to the United States to learn more about garment manufacture. A year later, he returned to France and opened his own fashion house. The first Guy Laroche fragrance appeared in 1966, a women's perfume called Fidji perfume. The highly successful women's fragrance J'ai Osé was launched in 1977, and it was only 5 years later that the men's cologne Drakkar Noir was launched. Guy Laroche died in 1989 but his name continues to be carried by fashion collections created by famous designers such as Michael Klein, Angelo Tarlazzi and Alber Elbaz.
